We at Lake Escapes of course invite you to explore and enjoy the lakes and boats in the Inland Northwest, but there are a plethora of activities in the area and all of them offer a taste of the wonderful history, culture, and general life in this beautiful place we call home. If you’re a guest in Coeur d’Alene and you love getting a feel for the depth of history in the area you’re visiting, may we suggest visiting the Museum of Northern Idaho. It’s reasonably priced for the whole family and a great way to explore that depth of history we were talking about.
Explore the 2021 Feature Exhibit at the Museum of Northern Idaho
For 2021, the museum is featuring an exhibit they call Hollywood of the North. There’s a rich cinematic history here between the movies that were filmed in the area and the stars who claimed Coeur d’Alene and the surrounding areas home.
Permanent Exhibits:
There are a number of long term exhibits to explore. To give you a taste, these include:
- McEuen Park which shows the change of the area around Tubbs Hill from a highly industrialized area to a recreational draw.
- Schitsu’umsh, “The People Who Were Discovered Here” shows the beadwork, tools, maps, and stories of the Coeur d’Alene Indians.
- When the Mountains Roared features the history, including graphics, about the massive 1910 fire in Idaho and Montana.
- Steamboats includes the original signal bells and steering wheel from the steamboat “Flyer,” along with photos and artifacts from steamboats which used to cruise Lake Coeur d’Alene.
Upcoming Permanent Exhibit
This one really excites us at Lake Escapes! It’s a fully immersive, interactive exploration of the waters of North Idaho. Say what! This is right up our alley, or shall we say waterway? Anyway, this will show—past, present and future—how the system of lakes, rivers and aquifer has influenced the livelihoods of those who live here. I mean, Lake Escapes wouldn’t have a purpose without all the amazing lakes around.
